An automated storage & retrieval system (AS/RS) is a state-of-the-art technology that combines equipment handling, storing and retrieving materials in a defined, automated way as per the requirement – with high accuracy and speed. Automated storage and retrieval systems are used for smooth handling and collection of parts throughout a facility, such as the inventory movement area, longterm buffer area, storage area for assembling component parts, consolidation & despatch area, etc. Another application is in retail facilities, to move purchased items from a storage area to a customer collection counter. AS/RS systems increase the efficiency of processes by reducing the time required for manual labour, providing improved bulk storage and the storage/sharing of real-time inventory data. AS/RS systems also enhance inventory security, as the storage environment is managed by a software system.

Automated storage and retrieval systems are used in a wide range of industries, such as manufacturing, food, e-commerce, beverages, electronics, retail, pharmaceuticals, plastics, hospitals, spares parts and warehousing, etc.

Often Stacker Cranes (see Fig. 1), conveyors, and automated guided vehicles are part of the automated storage and retrieval systems. These take loads into and out of a storage area and move them to the manufacturing floor or loading docks. In stacker cranes, to store or move a pallet or tray it is placed onto the platform of the stacker crane where a load pin (see Fig. 2) and photosensors are installed. The load pin is used to determine the weight and the photosensors are used for profiling the width, height and depth of the pallet. If the pallet is rejected due to incorrect weight or profile, it will be sent back to the input source for manual correction or replacement. After correction, it will go through the same process again.

The weighing is done by a Thames Side Sensors Load Pin connected to a model XT1000 weight transmitter. The capacity of the load pin can be up to 1000 tonnes with the material of construction being stainless steel. Thames Side’s load pins are customised as per the requirements of the client. The client will provide the required dimensions, choose their preferred output signal type, the load pin locking arrangement, the cable exit arrangement and the IP (ingress protection) rating - IP66 or IP68. Other options are available, such as ATEX certification, a version for hightemperature use, the addition of connectors and material certification to EN 10204 Part 3.1.

The accuracy of the load pin is ± 0.5% or better, with respect to the rated output. The XT1000 captures the incoming load data at a rate of 2400 measurements/second. It has a compact design and a high-resolution 24-bit ADC with 16,000,000 internal divisions. These parameters make Thames Side Sensors load pins perfect for this application and similar uses.
